Balut Sa Puti Festival
Introduction
The Balut sa Puti Festival is a unique and flavorful celebration held annually in Pateros, Metro Manila, Philippines, every last week of March or first week of April. It is a food festival that showcases the town’s culinary heritage and promotes the consumption of balut, a fertilized duck egg delicacy. The festival’s name is derived from Tagalog words “balut” and “puti,” which mean “fertilized duck egg” and “white,” respectively. It highlights the unique preparation of Pateros’ balut, which is wrapped in white paper before being steamed or boiled.
The Balut sa Puti Festival features a variety of events, including:
Balut sa Puti Cooking Competition: Local chefs compete to create the most delicious and innovative balut dishes.
Balut Eating Contest: Participants race to see who can eat the most balut in a given amount of time.
Balut Vendors’ Fair: A variety of balut vendors from Pateros and other parts of the Philippines sell their balut and other Filipino street food.
Cultural Performances: Traditional Filipino dances, songs, and games are performed throughout the festival.
Balut sa Puti Festival Queen Coronation: The highlight of the festival is the coronation of the Balut sa Puti Festival Queen, who is chosen for her beauty, intelligence, and advocacy for Pateros’ culinary heritage.
