Quiapo Church, officially known as the Minor Basilica of the Black Nazarene, is a prominent Roman Catholic church located in the district of Quiapo, Manila, Philippines.
It is renowned for housing the Black Nazarene, a life-sized dark wooden statue of Jesus Christ carrying the cross, which is believed to be miraculous by many devotees.
The church is a significant religious site and cultural landmark in the Philippines. Every January 9, millions of devotees participate in the annual Feast of the Black Nazarene, which includes a massive procession known as the Traslación, where the statue is paraded through the streets of Manila. This event attracts pilgrims from all over the country and is one of the largest religious gatherings in the world.
Quiapo Church’s history dates back to the late 16th century, and it has undergone several reconstructions due to damage from earthquakes and fires. Today, it stands as a symbol of faith and resilience for many Filipino Catholics.
Participating in a Mass at Quiapo Church can provide a deeper spiritual experience and an insightful glimpse into the local religious practices.
Within the church grounds, there are designated areas where visitors may respectfully light candles for prayers and contemplation. Additionally, various stalls around the church offer a variety of religious items, including rosaries, prayer books, and statues, for purchase.
Some individuals visit Quiapo to seek guidance and assistance from traditional healers or “hilot” practitioners who generously offer herbal remedies and healing practices.
