Helobung Festival
Introduction
The Helobung Festival, a vibrant celebration of the Tboli people’s rich culture and heritage in the Philippines, has been moved from November to May starting this year 2024. This change was announced by the local government of Lake Sebu, South Cotabato, in an effort to boost tourism during the summer season.
The Helobung Festival, which means “never-ending joy” in the Tboli language, is typically held for six days, culminating on the last Sunday of November. The festival features a colorful array of traditional dances, music, and rituals, showcasing the Tboli people’s deep connection to their land and ancestors.
The decision to move the festival to May was made in consultation with the Tboli community and other stakeholders. Organizers believe that the new schedule will attract more visitors to Lake Sebu and help promote the town’s unique culture and traditions.
Here are some of the highlights of the Helobung Festival:
- Madal Tahu and Madal Tahaw: These are two of the most popular dances performed during the festival. Madal Tahu is a lively dance that depicts the planting of rice, while Madal Tahaw is a more somber dance that represents the harvesting of rice.
- Tboli Weaving: The Tboli people are renowned for their intricate and beautiful weaving. During the festival, visitors can watch demonstrations of traditional Tboli weaving and purchase handmade Tboli textiles.
Tboli Music: The Tboli people have a rich musical tradition that is an integral part of the Helobung Festival. Visitors can enjoy performances of traditional Tboli music, including the kulintang (a set of gongs) and the hegalung (a bamboo flute).
Tboli Rituals: The Helobung Festival also features a number of traditional Tboli rituals, such as the B’laan, a thanksgiving ceremony for a bountiful harvest.
