Seaside Dampa

Seaside Dampa is a popular dining destination in the Philippines, known for its unique “dampa” style of dining. “Dampa” translates to “hut” in Filipino, signifying a humble, rustic setting.  But in this context, it refers to a type of seafood market and restaurant concept.

Seaside Dampa’s concept originates from the traditional Filipino “dampa” culture, which historically refers to small, informal huts or structures where food, often seafood, is sold and prepared.

The dampa concept began as simple roadside eateries or coastal market stalls where fishermen sold their fresh catch. Over time, these evolved into small restaurants that offered to cook the seafood bought by customers, giving rise to the “paluto” or “cooking” style of service. This was particularly popular in coastal towns and cities where fresh seafood was readily available.

The concept gained popularity in urban areas, especially in Metro Manila. The modern iteration of Dampa began to appear in the 1980s and 1990s, catering to the urban crowd looking for fresh seafood. One of the pioneering locations was the Seaside Market along Macapagal Boulevard in Pasay City, which became a model for other similar markets.

As the concept grew, specific areas or complexes like Seaside Dampa developed, combining a wet market and several restaurants in one location. These complexes allow customers to choose fresh seafood and have it cooked on-site according to their preferences. The model proved successful, leading to the establishment of multiple Seaside Dampa locations around the Philippines, including popular sites in Paranaque, Pasay, and Cebu.

At Seaside Dampa, customers first visit a wet market-style area where they can choose from a wide variety of fresh seafood, such as fish, crabs, shrimp, and shellfish. The seafood is typically caught fresh from local waters, offering a rich selection and high quality.

After selecting the seafood, customers bring their chosen ingredients to an affiliated restaurant within the complex. These restaurants offer a range of cooking styles and dishes, allowing customers to decide how they want their seafood prepared. Options might include grilling, frying, steaming, or cooking in various sauces.

The setting is often casual and lively, making it a popular spot for family gatherings, celebrations, or casual outings. The atmosphere is enhanced by the bustling market environment and the interactive dining experience.

By purchasing seafood directly and paying a cooking fee to the restaurant, diners often find this to be a more affordable way to enjoy fresh seafood compared to traditional restaurants.

Seaside Dampa locations are commonly found in coastal areas or cities with access to fresh seafood, making them a favorite destination for both locals and tourists looking to experience Filipino seafood cuisine in an authentic and engaging way.

Prices are very reasonable. Friendly people. Very fresh seafoods. We had our “paluto” at Sharmila Ihaw-Ihaw. People are very accomodating.Only comment thier hand soap is diluted with water that is why it is not forming any foam. I hope this will be improved and there were flies.

Very unique place for someone who's visiting the Philippines, or even a local. It is definitely worth visiting for the experience. Basically the first step is walk through the market, choose a vender, select and purchase your fresh seafood. Second you select one of many restaurants in the market to cook up your purchase. My suggestion would be to walk through the entire market to see what looks appetizing and ask what the prices are. Also as you walk through, people from the local restaurants will show a menu of how they prepare dishes and the price by weight on cooking your seafood selections. Google reviews for the restaurants located in the market can be helpful. Choose the restaurant, or take it home to prepare yourself. Finally enjoy! There are so many varieties of fish, shrimp, lobster, scallops, crab etc, to name them all. Just mention to the eager vendors and restaurateurs that you're just looking, don't feel pressured to make a purchase and enjoy the experience. At the end you will have indulged in some of the most delectable seafood ever.

Haggle as much as you can in the market. Make sure you get a good restaurant, usually the ones with lots of people inside. The bill can really rack up if you're not careful, so double-check your bill.. don't get overwhelmed by the people who try to get your attention, be ready for them. They'll try to convince you to choose them or their restau or store, ask questions, and check their menu. Obviously, if you ask if their food is good, they'll say yes. Look around, check what you want to buy, haggle, and just enjoy the experience. The seafood is fresh. Just make sure you're getting what you paid for (weight wise). Good luck.Tip: If you're a foreigner, bring a local who knows how to haggle.

Returned to Dampa for a seafood feast craving. Always satisfies my longing for freshly cooked dishes. Despite being a bit on the pricey side, the dining area tends to get swamp and while not super clean, it still holds its charm. However, the quality of the seafood keeps me coming back for more.

Many vendors competing to sell you fresh seafood, inflated prices on their list, but can compare from different vendors to get a reduced fee, then bring to restaurants next door to cook and season... best seafood dinner ever!
