Manila Cathedral

The Manila Cathedral, officially known as the Minor Basilica and Metropolitan Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, is a prominent Roman Catholic church in Intramuros, Manila, Philippines. Constructed in 1571 as a parish church, it became a cathedral in 1579 and has undergone several reconstructions due to earthquakes and wars.

The current cathedral, completed in 1958, showcases a Neo-Romanesque architectural style and houses significant relics, including those of Saint Polycarp and Saint Potenciana.

It features a grand pipe organ built in 1958, making it the largest church organ in Southeast Asia. The cathedral underwent extensive renovations to ensure structural stability and enhance its facilities, reopening to the public in 2014. Pope Francis celebrated his first papal mass in the Philippines at the Manila Cathedral during his apostolic visit in 2015. The Manila Cathedral-Basilica holds the distinction of being the Premier Church, Cathedral, and Basilica of the Philippines, initially established as the Church of Manila in 1571 and becoming the Cathedral in 1581 when the Philippines became a new diocese.

It was elevated to the rank of a Basilica by Pope John Paul II in 1981, making it the only church in the Philippines to receive this honor on the Pope’s own initiative.

Just a cathedral. Looking at the surroundings, I wonder if the official religion of this country is Catholicism.

The main cathedral in Manila. Large, elegant, but very ascetic. It appears similar to many other colonial Spanish churches. Heavy tourist traffic makes it more difficult to find a place for contemplation. But you have to visit it.

Me, my wife and her family, on a sightseeing trip in Manila, wanted to visit, view and pray inside of this very beautiful cathedral on 27th of May 2024. But some private school had been allowed to requisition the cathedral to hold some sort of student graduation or moving up ceremony that had nothing to do with religion or the worship of God which is the exclusive purpose of this venue. It has no business being done in what should be a house of God. They had closed off almost all the interior to visitors except the front entrance so Catholics (we are practicing Catholics ourselves) could not even go in there to sit down or kneel to pray or meditate whilst this event was going on. Some female teacher, principal or whatever she is was yelling out very loudly on a microphone all the announcements and proceedings of the graduation which violates the Biblical teaching in 1 Corinthians 14:34. It was an absolute disgrace! The private school holding the graduation obviously paid the cathedral office big money to hold their noisy disrespectful ruckus because the Manila cathedral office clergy & staff are obviously corrupt and have no respect or reverence for God or His sacred temples.I've been told that the Cebu cathedral and Santo Nino basilica offices do not allow school graduations or any other event of a secular kind in their churches because they have greater respect and reverence for God and His houses.

This cathedral is a few minutes walk from Fort Santiago and is worth a visit. Classic Catholic cathedral architecture and the site of the first church in manila. Has been restored brilliantly. You can pray if you want but not necessary. Beautiful statues inside are also a great gift shop if you want to purchase any Catholic items at good prices also. There are ice cream and drink vendors outside 40 php for delicious flavours. I highly recommend this site.

The Metropolitan Cathedral and Minor Basilica of The Immaculate Conception is one of the oldest, most historical, and one of the most beautiful churches in the Philippines. This is the ecclesiastical seat of the Archdiocese of Manila, and it's also the mother church of all churches in The Philippines. The mass here was amazing.Exterior: The church itself is very big, and the exterior is very beautiful, historical, and iconic.Interior: The interior is also beautiful with many decorations. The altar was the most beautiful. It was also air-conditionedMass: Everything was perfect. The singing was amazing, the sermon was also very good.Everything was very good in this historical and iconic cathedral in intramuros.

Manila Cathedral is hands down one of the most stunning places you can visit in the Philippines. Seriously, the moment you step inside, you're hit with this overwhelming sense of awe and reverence. The architecture alone is mind-blowing – those intricate carvings, the colorful stained glass windows, and don't even get me started on the altars. It's like stepping into another world. And the history behind the cathedral? It's like something out of a movie. Built way back in 1571, it's been through so much – fires, earthquakes, you name it. But each time, they've rebuilt it even grander than before. You can just feel the weight of all that history when you're standing there. But what really gets you is the atmosphere. Whether you're a devout Catholic or just someone looking for a bit of peace and quiet, the cathedral has this way of making you feel all warm and fuzzy inside. It's like a little sanctuary in the middle of the bustling city. And let's not forget the events they hold there. Weddings, baptisms, Masses – you name it, they do it. There's just something so special about experiencing those moments in such a beautiful place. So yeah, if you're ever in Manila, do yourself a favor and swing by the cathedral. Trust me, you won't regret it.
