Sorteo Festival

Introduction

The Sorteo Festival, also known as the Sorteo ng Bukid ng Bayan Festival, is a triennial cultural and harvest festival held in Carmona City, Cavite, Philippines every February 20. It commemorates the tradition of sorteo, a lottery in designating farm workers to till fertile lands every three years. Carmona also celebrates Charter Day every February 23.

The word Sorteo means to draw or raffle. The festival was started way back in 1861 or four years after the formation of Carmona. It is celebrated every 3 years from February 16 to 22.

Here are some of the highlights of the Sorteo Festival:

  • The Sayaw ng mga Babalikan: This is a ritualized dance performed by men and women dressed in traditional Filipino attire. The dance represents the courtship and marriage of the early settlers of Carmona.

  • The Karakol: This is a street procession that features a colorful float carrying the image of the Santo Niño (Holy Child Jesus). The procession is accompanied by devotees singing and dancing to the beat of drums.

  • The Higantes Parade: This is a parade of giant papier-mâché figures, representing different saints and heroes. The parade is a colorful and lively event that takes place on the eve of the festival.

  • The Street Parties: The street parties are a major part of the Sorteo Festival. They take place throughout the week of the festival, and they feature live music, dancing, and drinking.
